Equine infectious anemia (EIA) or swamp fever as it is known colloquially, has been recognized as a viral disease of horses since the early 1900's when its filterable etiology was documented (Vallee and Carre, 1904). Since the pioneering studies in the 1940's, EIA has been generally regarded as a scourge of the horse industry (Stein et al., 1942, 1943). Many relatively difficult technical hurdles were faced in the early EIA research; among the most notable was the development of reliable in vitro assays for EIA virus (EIAV) and specific diagnostic test. Many of these hurdles were cleared by the early 1970's when Japanese researchers utilized mixed leukocyte cultures to document the kinet-ics of virus persistence in infected horses and discovered the phenomenon of antigenic drift of EIAV in horses with chronic signs of EIA (Kono and Yokomizo, 1968; Kono et al., 1970, 1973). |
